Referee Program

Being a referee is a tough job that requires a thick skin and an appreciation of children!

We have our own Referee Program which follows closely the standards set by the Westchester Soccer Referee Organization and similar organizations, as well as FIFA's Laws of the Game.  Local youths and adults are welcome to join.   Initially, we collect names of those interested and send out information to them over the summer.  We have a training session the first week of September to review the rules.

During the season, referees sign up for games on a week-by-week basis.  We usually start rookie referees in the Minors Division and pair them with a more experienced referee for the first game.  The referees are responsible for officiating according to FIFA's Laws of the Game and the LJSL Rules and for ensuring that the game is safe, fair and fun.  They are taught that their goal is to help create an enjoyable experience for everyone and we do all we can through training to support them in understanding how to accomplish this.

Every game deserves the referee’s best efforts and and he or she should be allowed the leeway to officiate each game as it were a championship match.  We urge spectators to recognize that the referee’s decisions are final and not open to protest.  Parents especially must always remember to treat the referees with deference, no matter what age they may be.  Parents must speak to the referees respectfully, in the same way they would like others to speak to their own children.

LJSL players and spectators always abide by these two rules:   1) The Referee is always right; and 2) If the Referee is wrong, refer to Rule No. 1.
